Storm Team

Phil Sakal
Chief Meteorologist

Phil Sakal was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio where his fascination with weather began. From three feet of snow from a lake effect snow storm, to golf ball size hail Northeast Ohio had it all. From a very early age Phil knew he wanted to be a Meteorologist. Phil went to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio where he majored in Meteorology/Geography.While at OU he was a member of the Meteorology Club. He is also a member of the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. Phil interned at WEWS Newschannel 5 in Cleveland, Ohio before coming to WHIZ in May of 2012. He is excited to be apart of the WHIZ Storm Team, and you can catch him on Sunrise in Southeast Ohio every weekday morning at 6 AM. In his free time, other than keeping tabs on the weather, Phil enjoys golfing, watching the Cleveland Indians and Browns, and is always on the look out for a great pizza! Feel free to drop him a line!

I grew up in Northwest Ohio, but I have family in Erie, PA and growing up, I visited Erie quite a bit - which is maybe where I got my love for snow. I attended the Pennsylvania State University, spending two years at Penn State Behrend in Erie, and while I was there I completed two internships; one at WICU-TV and the other at WJET-TV. I finished up my college years at Penn State Main, graduating in December 2016 with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology. I immediately went to work as the weekend meteorologist in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and then as weekend meteorologist at a station in West Virginia. I am excited to finally be back in Ohio, forecasting the weather.

Gunnar Consol
Weekend Meteorologist / Reporter
Gunnar is a recent graduate of Plymouth State University in Plymouth, New Hampshire having majored in meteorology with minors in mathematics and communications. He was on the varsity track & field team all four of his years at Plymouth competing in the long jump, triple jump, and 100m and 200m races. Growing up in Central Florida, having endured many relentless hurricane seasons and experiencing pop-up thunderstorms everyday during the summer inspired his initial interest in the weather. A lack of cold weather subsequently drove him to attend college in New Hampshire. This was to experience a whole other side of the weather: winter. He is excited to have just moved to Ohio and explore what all the state has to offer. He also hopes that Ohio is a happy middle ground between how hot Florida is and how cold New Hampshire is. In his free time, Gunnar enjoys staying active, going on photography photoshoots, and gardening.
