Dr. Shirley Kay Bell, EdD, RN, 68 of Glendale, AZ, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Friday November 12, 2010, at Kindred Hospital Care Center in Phoenix, AZ.
Shirley was born November 24, 1941 in Spencer Township, OH, the daughter of the late Robert Conner and Eleanore Marie (Hall) Bell.

Shirley was a 1962 graduate of the Bethesda School of Nursing. She worked at Bethesda and Guernsey Memorial Hospitals before attending the University of Cincinnati, earning her Bachelor’s Degree. She earned her Master’s Degree from Wayne State University. Dr. Bell taught at West Virginia University for 17 years, where she earned her Doctorate (EdD) in Nursing Education. She taught nursing undergraduates for four years at The Ohio State University before moving to Arizona where she taught at Arizona State University for 20 years. While teaching at ASU Dr. Bell also taught graduate courses at the University of Phoenix. Dr. Bell was a member of The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation’s oldest academic society. Dr. Bell was published in the American Journal of Nursing and other professional nursing journals. She co-authored a book, was a consultant and contributor on several books and publications. She was the featured speaker at many professional conferences and served on multiple state’s nursing program accreditation councils. Dr. Bell was an officer and held membership in numerous professional organizations including both the West Virginia and Arizona State Nurses Association, also acting as a delegate to national nursing conventions. She was Treasurer of the American Heart Association in the states of West Virginia and Arizona. Dr. Bell retired after more than 40 years of teaching nursing, and has been inducted into the Rolling Hills Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.

Shirley loved spending time with her family and friends. She always kept the love of her family roots and community close to her heart throughout the years. As an Aunt, she was especially proud of her niece and nephews and encouraged their education and interests. Shirley was a 50 year member of Eastern Star, and often donated generously to the local churches. Shirley was a life-long member of the Cumberland United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling; visiting 49 states and returning to Hawaii three times. Some of her hobbies included being an avid football fan, watching The OSU Buckeyes, reading and collecting owls and Nativity scenes.

Shirley is lovingly remembered by her brother (Roger Bell), sister (Beverly Bell), sister-in-law (Gail Bell), niece (Heather Bell), three nephews (David, Richard and Bryan Bell), her large extended family and good friend Larry Gilbert, Jr.

Guernsey Chapter #211, Cambridge O.E.S. will hold Eastern Star Services at 5:00 p.m. Friday Evening.

Calling hours will be from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Friday November 19th at Tom & Farus Funeral Home, 343 Main Street, Cumberland, Ohio. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Saturday with Pastor Keith Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Cumberland Cemetery.
