Phillip A. ”Phil” Porter, I (July 14, 1944 – April 19, 2010)


Phillip A. ”Phil” Porter, I, 65 of Zanesville, passed peacefully surrounded by his family and friends at 5:57 PM Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Genesis Morrison House Hospice following a two year courageous battle with cancer. He was born Friday, July 14, 1944 in Zanesville, the son of George L. Porter and Gertrude V.(Irvin) Porter.

He was a member of Gratiot United Methodist Church and was a veteran of The United States Navy serving during the Vietnam War. He was a former employee of Bethesda and Good Samaritan Hospitals as a Registered Nurse. Phillip also was employed with IRD Mechananalysis in Columbus and was General Manager of Dynamics Research in Richfield. He was a member of Brownsville Lodge Jackson # 85 Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio and was an avid golfer.

Phillip is survived by one son: Phillip A. Porter, II of Columbus; one daughter: Sally Ann Weber of Columbus; one grand daughter: Josie Weber of Columbus; two brothers: L. Joe Porter, MD of Fort Myers, FL. and George Douglas (Marianne) Porter of Westerville; loving companion and caregiver: Sandra L. Porter of the home; best friend and caregiver: Mike Mills of Zanesville; special friends: Earl “Spook” and Melodie Halfen and family of Houston, TX; lifelong friend: John Gutridge of Gratiot and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at The Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, Zanesville where Jackson Lodge will conduct Masonic Services at 7:45 PM. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, April 22, with visitation from 10:00 AM till time of service at Gratiot United Methodist Church, Gratiot with Rev. Chuck Norris officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Forks Cemetery with VFW Post 1058 conducting Full Military Honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Genesis Morrison Hospice or The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Department of Radiation – Oncology, Mail Room T 28, 9500 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44195 in Phillip’s name.
