Paul P. Zigo (July 8, 1914 – April 13, 2011)

Paul P. Zigo, 96, passed away on April 13, 2011, at Genesis Hospice Morrison House from complications following a stroke. Paul lived on Newark Road for 53 years before moving in January 2010 to Primrose Retirement Community

Paul was born in Pittsburgh, PA, July 8, 1914 to Katharina and Stefan Zigo. The family moved to Adamsville when Paul was a child. He attended Valley School, a one room school in Adamsville. He attended Adamsville and Chandlersville High Schools and graduated from Meredith Business College.

In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Staff Sergeant in the Pacific Theater with MacArthur’s forces until his discharge in 1945. He was a long-time member of the VFW Post 1058 where he served as Quartermaster for 10 years.

Paul was hired by First Trust and Savings bank in 1941 and returned to the bank after his Army discharge. He rose from a bookkeeper to Senior Vice-President and Cashier retiring from Central Trust Company of Zanesville in 1978.

Paul enjoyed gardening on his farm on Newark Road. He sold vegetables and fruit to several local restaurants and often donated extra produce to the Muskingum County Home.

Paul and his wife, Rita, belonged to the Zanes and Janes Western Dancing club. He enjoyed bowling, playing pool and was a member of several card clubs.

A long time supporter of local youth baseball, Paul was a member of the Muskingum Valley Oldtimers Association. Paul and Rita often attended Junior and Senior Pioneer baseball games.

The oldest male member of St. Thomas Aquinas parish, Paul served for many years as secretary/treasurer of the Grand-A-Month drawing, the annual parish festival, and the finance committee.

Paul was a past member of the Zanesville Chamber of Commerce, past member of the Sertoma Club, and former treasurer of the Zanesville Citizens Committee of the National Council on Crime. He was a past volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America.

Paul is survived by a sister, Sister Mary Zigo of Manitowoc, WI, three sons, Stephen Zigo of Norwalk, OH, Christopher Zigo (Cathy) of Dublin, OH, and Michael Zigo (Barbara) of Bluffton, SC, a daughter, Stephanie Harnetty of Zanesville, a step daughter, Constance Kihm (James) of Parkton, MD, a daughter from a previous marriage, Joy Zigo of Astoria, NY, 8 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

Paul is preceded in death by his parents, Stefan and Katharina Zigo, his wife, Rita Florence (nee Orwig), a sister, Phyllis Stone of Mansfield, OH, a half brother, Joseph Zigo of Zanesville, two half sisters, Margaret Corbin and Rose Donnelly of Zanesville, two step brothers, John Soter and Mike Soter of Zanesville, and two step sisters, Anna Soter Zigo of Adamsville and Mary Soter Graves of Zanesville.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 on Friday, April 15 at Bryan & Snider Funeral Home at 2318 Maple Avenue, Zanesville, OH where Vigil services will be at 7:45 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday April 16, 2011 at 10:30 AM at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Fr. Jordan Turano as celebrant, followed by burial at Mt. Olive Cemetery.
