Joseph “Joe” E. Smith

Joseph “Joe” E. Smith, passed from this life into heaven on February 12, 2022.  Joe was born on October 8, 1936, in Dresden, and graduated from Hopewell High School in 1954. He spent his youth hunting and playing sports, especially baseball. He would go on to play ball for the Zanesville Merchants and developed a lifelong love for the game. Joe was an avid hunter and enjoyed deer hunting with family and friends.

He was a great storyteller, one who knew how a story ought to be told.      Humorous stories were his favorite and he told them often after which he laughed his wonderful laugh, the kind you couldn’t help but join. Woodworking was his hobby and he built many beautiful things he was proud of. But if you asked him what he built that he was most proud of he would have told you the relationship he had with his sweetheart, Janie, and the family they built together.

Joe also enjoyed reading Zane Grey novels, watching Western movies, and coaching little league. When friends and family needed help with     household projects he was always there to lend a hand.

Joe is survived by his wife of 66 years Janice S. (Gard) Smith of Hopewell; two daughters Cindy [Mike] Brandom of Zanesville and Lori [Paul] Jared of Middletown. A son Joseph E. [Angie] Smith Jr. of Columbia, South Carolina, and a sister, Flora Noland of Dresden, and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was deeply loved and will be missed by all.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Carl E. “Bud” Smith and Lillian Summers Smith and a brother Larry Lee Smith of San Saba, Texas.

The Smith family would like to express their gratitude to the staff, nurses and doctors at Altercare for their dedication and care. Your      love for Joe was genuine and a great comfort to all of us.  A celebration of life will be held at a later time.  To sign the online guestbook or leave a personal note of condolence please visit
