John Wesley Nelson, 94, of Zanesville, died Thursday, February 18, 2021, at Clay Garden Place in Zanesville. He was born July 1, 1926, in Cincinnati, the son of Charles Wesley Nelson and Annabelle Grasty Nelson. He married Maxine (Williams) Nelson and was an Elder of The Hillside Seventh Day Adventist Church in Zanesville.
John served his country during World War II as a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps. John was a member of the Tuskegee Airman where he was a bomber, and following the war he was a retrieval pilot at Fort Briggs, New Jersey.
John retired from the New York City Transit Authority following many years of service. Following retirement John and Maxine moved back to Zanesville to enjoy their retirement years.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife: Maxine Nelson who died January 29, 1999, and his son: Kenneth “Kenny” DeWitt Nelson who died November 20, 2017
Also preceded in death are his sisters and brothers Alyce Elizabeth Collins and Emily Mae Mitchelson, Thomas Pierre Mitchelson, James Earl Nelson, Charles Edward Nelson, Doris Anne Harris, AnnaMarie Nelson
John is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, February 26, 2021, at the Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, Zanesville. He will be escorted by the Zanesville Ohio police department. John will be laid to rest beside his wife in Woodlawn Cemetery with the United States Air Force, VFW Post 1058 and American Legion Post 29 conducting full military honors.
