Frank Edward “Ed” Sterling, 89 of Zanesville, died Tuesday, May 3, 2022, surrounded by his family at Middleton Senior Living in Granville. He was born September 30, 1932, in Hopedale, the son of Carl Jessie Sterling and Caroline May (Staymate) Sterling, and married Melanie A. (Schultheis) Sterling on Sunday, May 4, 1958.
Ed served this country as a veteran of the United States Army. Ed retired from ARMCO Steel as Superintendent of Engineering and Maintenance following over 30 years of service. Ed enjoyed his role as public servant serving on the Starlight Board of Directors; the Board of East Muskingum Water Authority where he helped to improve water and sewer management throughout Muskingum County, and was a Foster Grandparent helping many local youth.
Ed was a very active member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served on many boards and committees, and would always be by Melanie’s side during all the church dinners. He as very active in the Westgate neighbor group; he enjoyed playing golf, and the stock market; but most of all he loved dancing with his wife. Ed was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who greatly enjoyed all the time he spent with them. Although his stature was small he was known for his big heart, and he always made an impression.
Ed is survived by three daughters: Susan (Douglas) Abercrombie of Mooresville, NC, Cathy (Russ) Nelson of Zanesville, and Ann (Michael) Taylor of Granville; one son: Mike Sterling of Zanesville; nine grandchildren: Jenna (Jared) Luburgh, Michelle Abercrombie, Kelsey Sterling, Joseph Quinn, Elizabeth (Corey) Buckingham, Colin (Hunter) Abercrombie, Zachary Taylor and Maxwell Taylor; seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his wife of over 61 years: Melanie Sterling; one grandson: Andrew Quinn; three brothers: Tommy, Eugene “Red” and Bo Sterling.
Friends may call Friday, May 13, 2022, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, at the Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, Zanesville, and one hour prior to services from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, at the church. Funeral Services will be held 12 Noon, Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 128 South Seventh Street, Zanesville, with Rev. Andrew Wilson officiating.
