Edwin K. Reed

Edwin K. Reed, 93, of Cumberland passed away peacefully at his home on February 16, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Edwin was born May 30, 1929 to the late Ermine K. and Bessie (Shuster) Reed in Renrock, Ohio. He was a 1947 graduate of Reinersville High School where he was a 4 year varsity basketball player. He also served our country in the United States Air Force from 1951 through 1955, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant/Master Mechanic. Edwin retired from Monroe Grading Company of Cumberland after twenty-five years. Edwin was also a member of the United Mine Workers of America, the Sharon Masonic Lodge #136, Belle Valley American Legion Post #641 and Caldwell VFW. He was also a member of the Ohio Cattlemen’s, Guernsey County Cattlemen’s Associations, and a Meadowbrook FFA Honoree.

Edwin and Wreatha hosted the 1995 Farm/City Day and 1993 Ohio Cattlemen’s Farm Tour at their beautiful farm. Dad and Mom were avid farmers and LOVED the country life, always saying, “You’re not going to make any money, but it’s the best way to raise a family.”

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Wreatha Ann (Calland) Reed, whom he married November 26, 1956, who passed away September 26, 2007; one daughter, Deidre Ann Reed Lauer, who passed on November 29, 1982; his brother, Carlos Reed; as well as his sisters, Lila Reed Caldwell and Donna Reed Milhone.

Surviving are his children, Jon (Carla) Reed of Byesville, Donna (Don Ross) Weingart of Cambridge, Debra (Brian Stone) Bennington of Lore City, and Dolores “Bootsie” (Matt) McFarland of North Carolina; his seventeen grandchildren, Ryan Lauer, Jessie (Aaron) Reed Webb, Kaleigh (Jeremy Archer) Reed, Sara (Anthony) Reed Helvik, Justin (Megan) Weingart, Kyle (Morgan) Weingart, Cody (Tori) Weingart, Garrett (Taylor) Bennington, Ethan Bennington, Ian (Sarah) McFarland, JT (Britany) McFarland, Terra (Landon) Campbell, Lexi McFarland, Eric (Laura) Bennington, April (Jan) Bauerdick, Michele Clewell, Rachael (Jay) Boreman; thirty-nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; as well as his special friends, Rick Weingart and Bob Bennington.

The family would like to thank the Hospice of Guernsey County for their excellent care and support.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making donations to Hospice of Guernsey County.

Friends may call Sunday, February 19, 2023, from 2 to 6 PM at the Farus Funeral Home of New Concord, 63 West Main Street in New Concord, Ohio, where Masonic services will be held at 6 PM by Sharon Lodge. Friends may also call on Monday, February 20, 2023 from 11 to 1 PM, where funeral services will follow. Pastor Beverly and Steve Pottmyer will officiate the service. Edwin will be laid to rest beside his wife in Ark Spring Cemetery with military honors provided by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
