Dr. Susan Tuck Rooksby

Dr. Susan Tuck Rooksby succumbed to metastatic breast cancer on July 17, 2022, surrounded by family at her home in Spokane, Washington. Susan was a devoted mother and wife, talented and committed pediatric anesthesiologist, and expert in all matters pertaining to Britain’s royal family.

She was born on July 29, 1981, in Zanesville, Ohio. She aspired to attend college in one of the original 13 colonies, which led her to the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. There she would meet her husband when both attended a training to become campus tour guides. A fascination for women’s health and a desire to serve others led her to medical school at the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she received her M.D. in 2007. She stayed at that institution to complete a medical residency in anesthesia, then headed to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia. She worked as an attending physician at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center from 2012 to 2018 before moving to Spokane, Washington with her family, where she worked at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center until 2021.

She is survived by Jacob Harrison Rooksby, her husband of 15 years; her daughter Mary Foster Rooksby, age 9; her parents, Richard Harrison Tuck and Cynthia Boyd Tuck, of Zanesville, Ohio; her sister Laura Tuck Maasdam, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; her sister Rachel Tuck Mayoras, of San Diego, California; and an extended family who remember her fondly as a favorite aunt, cousin, niece, sister-and-law, and daughter-in-law.

In 2012, while seven months pregnant, Susan was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. During her ten-year struggle with the disease, Susan underwent a battery of treatments, and yet no one would ever know from meeting her. Cancer did not define Susan. She was much more interested in other people, and exploring the world, than she was discussing her own diagnosis or circumstance.

To further her legacy, donations may be made to the Susan Tuck Rooksby Memorial Foundation, a Washington nonprofit corporation established to help her daughter learn more about the people, places, and experiences that made her mother so loved and unique.
