Daniel C. Burgess

Daniel C. Burgess of Richland, MO, formerly of Zanesville, passed away peacefully at his home, Tuesday, March 22, 2022. He was born October 22, 1931, in Zanesville, the son of Charles Ball Burgess & Geraldine Louise Steil Burgess.

At a young age of 8, he began working as a caddie for the Zanesville Country Club. From that, he was forever drawn to the game of golf, the PGA and a dream of being a golf course owner. Dan graduated in 1954 from Miami of Ohio, along with high school and Miami sweetheart, Rita (Miami, 1953).  Rita Louise Adams and Daniel Charles Burgess were married 19 June 1954 and had to this union Beth, Bill, and Amy. Daniel worked for GMAC for 19 years before purchasing Hickory Hills Golf Club in Jackson, Michigan in December 1972. He then purchased the business of Richland Golf & Country Club in Richland, Missouri in 1982 for a warmer climate and longer golfing season. At the age of 58, Dan became a PGA Professional. They both loved running a golf course and all the friends that they made in 50 years of business, many of these friends became like family.

Rita preceded Dan in death November 15, 2020 after 66 years of marriage and 71 years of friendship. Dan was also preceded in death by his parents, sisters and brothers-in-law Mary Ann Green (Don), Peggy Mahaffey (Jim), and sister-in-law Shirley Luallen.

Immediate family surviving are Beth Burgess Ticknor and husband Dennis, William Burgess, Amy Burgess Aikens and husband Lloyd; grandchildren Zane Burgess, Kendall Burgess Losensky (Paul), Kimberly Ticknor, Merik Burgess, Alli Kate Aikens; great-grandchildren Aryeh, Louise, Albert and Harriet Losensky; brother-in-law Bob Luallen of Lancaster, Ohio, niece Annette Luallen Magill (Steve); and many nieces and nephews from the families of Mahaffey, Green.

Several years ago, for a Miami College reunion, Dad wrote this about his favorite Miami memories and current activities:

Activities in Withrau Court: the little 9-hole golf course, handball, pit volleyball, basketball….Big Bands and campus owl dances…  “Walking On” Ara’s Freshman team and making it without having high school football experience. Scrimmages against Woody’s Varsity… Bailey, Pont, Root, etc.  “Thumbing” home for breaks. …This all seems like yesterday… wasn’t it??

Dan was too busy for other activities except golf. In June 1954, he graduated from Miami, and married his high school sweetheart, and entered Ohio State University Law School. Later employed by General Motors he left the corporation in 1973, purchasing a 9-hole Michigan golf course, and in 1976, constructed the back nine, opening in 1977, as an eighteen-hole course. We later sold the Michigan course, moved to Missouri for year-round play. We purchased, renovated, and reopened a defunct 9-hole course in Missouri. I am still active in daily operations with our son, Bill, who joined us in 1995.  Avocation turned into Vocation – dreams realized – blessed and grateful.

Dan hated funerals, so a private Catholic Mass will be celebrated at St. Nicholas Catholic Church and he will be laid to rest beside his beloved Rita in Mt. Olive Cemetery. To sign the online guestbook or leave a personal note of condolence please visit www.hilliscombsnestor.com

That’s what we are to call you, Dad. We love you.
