Carl R. Harlan

Carl R. Harlan, 80, of Frazeysburg, Ohio died Tuesday afternoon January 17, 2023 at Genesis Hospital in Zanesville.

Born October 11, 1942 in Champaign County, Ohio, he was a son of the late Ray E. and Viola M. (Gundolph) Harlan and was a graduate of Jeffersonville High School.  Carl received his bachelor’s from The Ohio State University, where he dormed in “the shoe” football stadium, and proudly served in the Coast Guard Reserves for over 35 years.  He served 41 years with Frazeysburg Volunteer Fire Department where he served as firefighter, EMT, EMT instructor, and Fire Chief. He also served on the S.A.R.A. program and coordinated local fireworks events.  Carl was a past member of Lion’s Club and a teacher and school board member for Tri-Valley Schools.

Surviving is his loving wife, Sherryl (Watson) Harlan whom he married October 22, 1976; three sons, Brian (Tracey) Harlan of Kingsland, GA, Roger (Amysta) Harlan of Stone Mountain, GA and Steven (Christina) Harlan of Ontario, CA; a daughter, Casey (Steven Hazward) Allen of Durham, NC; three step-daughters, Carrie Pickett, Karen Barnhart and Rose Barnhart all of Frazeysburg; two brothers, Harold (Norma) Harlan and Eugene (Norma) Harlan; a granddaughter, Allanna Harlan; three step-grandchildren, Ranie, Bobby and Brandy; nine step great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Max and Howard Harlan.

Friends and family may call from 4pm to 7pm Monday, January23, 2023 at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Homes, 110 West Third Street.

Funeral services will be held immediately following, beginning at 7pm with Pastor Jeff Harlan officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Frazeysburg Lions Club or Frazeysburg Volunteer Fire Department.
