DALLAS (AP) — All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving is being traded by the Brooklyn Nets. The team has struck a deal with the Dallas Mavericks. That’s according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither team had announced the move. The Mavericks will trade Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith and a package of draft picks to the Nets. The blockbuster trade ends Irving’s pairing with Kevin Durant before it ever had much of a chance to click. Dallas also gets Markieff Morris in the deal.
Shiffrin’s Beijing lesson helps after another big-race DNF
MERIBEL, France (AP) — American skier Mikaela Shiffrin failed to finish the slalom portion of the women’s combined event on the opening day of the world championships. Shiffrin straddled the third-to-last gate while appearing to be close to beating first-run leader Federica Brignone. The American was trailing Brignone by 0.96 seconds after the super-G portion but had made up 0.88 of that difference before skiing out. Shiffrin reacted with apparent open-mouthed astonishment before bending over her ski poles. She then went over to Brignone and embraced the Italian skier. Shiffrin is competing in her first major event since failing to win a medal in six starts at last year’s Beijing Olympics.
Man City accused of misleading Premier League over finances
Manchester City has been accused of numerous breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules between 2009-18. The period covers the first nine full seasons under the club’s Abu Dhabi ownership. City won the league on three occasions during that time in 2012, 2014 and 2018. The league released a long statement detailing a list of alleged breaches of regulations by City after a four-year investigation. The league says it has referred the breaches to an independent commission. City hasn’t yet commented on the allegations from the Premier League.
Purdue stays No. 1 in AP Top 25; NC State in at No. 22
Purdue remains atop The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll despite losing its second game of the season. The new poll out Monday also saw Marquette push into the top 10 and North Carolina State make its first poll appearance in four years. The Boilermakers earned 38 of 62 first-place votes to stay at No. 1 for a third straight week and seventh time this season. Houston rose to No. 2 with 22 first-place votes. Marquette is in the top 10 for the first time since 2019. That also was the last time N.C. State was ranked before checking in at No. 22.
Jaromír Jágr scores his record 1,099th goal at almost 51
PRAGUE (AP) — Jaromír Jágr celebrated his 51st birthday about a week early by scoring his 1,099th goal to overtake Wayne Gretzky at the top of the chart. Jágr scored for the Kladno Knights on Sunday in 5-4 loss at Trinec in the Czech league. The winger will turn 51 on Feb. 15. Jágr was the NHL’s second highest point scorer in 2018 when he was released by the Calgary Flames. He scored his 1,099 goals in professional games and at international tournaments. Gretzky had 1,072 regular season and playoff goals in the NHL and WHA combined with 26 at international adult tournaments.
Jesse Marsch fired by Leeds after nearly a year in charge
LEEDS, England (AP) — American coach Jesse Marsch has been fired by Leeds after nearly a year in charge of the Premier League team. Leeds hasn’t won any of its last seven games in the league and has dropped into 17th place in the 20-team division. The team is only out of the relegation zone on goal difference. Marsch’s last game was a 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest on Sunday. He said after that there was a belief inside the club that results would improve. The 49-year-old Marsch was hired in February last year as a replacement for Marcelo Bielsa. Bielsa was the manager for 3 1/2 years and got Leeds promoted to the Premier League.
Brignone wins worlds combined race after Shiffrin straddles
MERIBEL, France (AP) — Italian skier Federica Brignone won the women’s combined race on the opening day of the world championships after defending champion Mikaela Shiffrin skied out near the end of her slalom run. Shiffrin seemed to be on her way to beating Brignone but the American straddled the third-to-last gate. She was trailing Brignone by 0.96 seconds after the super-G portion but had made up 0.88 of that difference before skiing out. Brignone held on to her lead to become the first world champion from Italy in the women’s combined. Wendy Holdener took the silver medal and Ricarda Haaser won bronze.
Warriors say Curry sidelined with left leg injury
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Golden State All-Star guard Stephen Curry has partial tears to a ligament and a membrane in his left leg and a lower-leg contusion. The team says he’ll be sidelined but aren’t sure for how long. Curry is averaging 29.4 points per game this season. He won’t play Monday against Oklahoma City. He originally hurt his leg on Thursday and left Saturday’s game against Dallas in the third quarter after the leg appeared to buckle as he played defense.
Super Bowl draws epic air show of private planes to Phoenix
PHOENIX (AP) — Private jet-setters are the reason every Super Bowl comes with super-size air traffic. Officials expect more than 1,000 additional planes to descend on metropolitan Phoenix’s eight airports and beyond this week for the matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles as well as the Phoenix Open. Many of them will be carrying entertainers, sports figures and corporate VIPs who don’t have to deal with long security lines or cramped coach seats. Instead they’ll be sitting back eating filet mignon and imbibing. Even with the expected long line of airplane departures after the game and high airport fees, some say nothing beats the convenience.
Chiefs, Eagles land in Phoenix, prepare for Super Bowl 57
PHOENIX (AP) — A few minutes after the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes landed in Phoenix, the pilot hung a “Chiefs Kingdom” flag out of the window as players, coaches and staff got off the plane and walked across the runway. About an hour later, it was the Philadelphia Eagles who arrived in Arizona, with an “It’s a Philly Thing” flag fluttering in the runway as quarterback Jalen Hurts, coach Nick Sirianni and others made their way to a fleet of buses. Super Bowl 57 is just one week away. The Chiefs will face the Eagles on Feb. 12 in Glendale, Arizona.
