ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Muskingum County Library System holds many events for people of all ages to improve and appreciate their literacy.  Youth Services Manager Haley Shaw announced an upcoming event at the John McIntire Library that allows readers to express appreciation for their comic heroes by dressing the part.

“On October 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. we are hosting the first ever MCLS Comic-Con here at the John McIntire Library,” Shaw said. “It’s going to be a really fun day. We’re going to have all kinds of cool events. We’re going to do anime trivia, there’s going to be a Cosplay competition. We’re also going to set up our game room with our Nintendo Switch and our X-Box Series-X and a bunch of board games for people to play.”

The event will showcase the importance of literacy as well as the fun that it can provide. Comics are a medium that entertains by combining visual expressions with text that captivates readers and creates fans.

“Comics are a really awesome form of media in that they promote both like reading words, type of literacy but also visual literacy because it teaches you how to evaluate things from the images you are seeing on the page and how to put a story together. So they’re such a unique form of media and have long been stigmatized as being like not literature or like a low form of art that it’s really growing and we want to promote that,” Shaw said.

The library has a large collection of comics and since the beginning of the pandemic their circulation has increased significantly. For more information about the Comic-Con and the Cosplay events, you can visit muskingumlibrary.org.
