Infamous Bar Demolished

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – An infamous bar known for harboring illegal activities has been demolished. The structure formerly known as Hoppy’s Bar, located at 753 Putnam Avenue was forfeited by its last owner, who was arrested for trafficking marijuana.

Muskingum County Prosecuting Attorney Ron Welch explained how the property has been a nuisance over the past couple of decades.

“It’s been the location where we’ve had dozens of police calls, a half dozen or so shootings, numerous fights, and the people in the area had requested that something be done about it,” Welch said.

Currently, the county owns the property and has looked into finding ways to repurpose the structure but wasn’t able to find a suitable alternative. Additionally, the empty structure obscured the view from Putnam Avenue to any illicit activities happening in the vacant area behind it.

“I’d like to thank the Zanesville Police Department for their involvement. The members of Putnam, who’ve been instrumental in providing us feedback of what they’d like to see done. And we’re happy to be able to do something positive in this part of town,” Welch said.

The razing was meant to send a clear message to criminals that underground operations that terrorize peaceful citizens have no place in Muskingum County.

Welch noted that the county will clean and maintain the property but has not determined any further actions.
