Area Fire Chief Being Honored by Fire Marshal’s Office

An area fire chief is receiving an award next week from the State Fire Marshal’s Office for his service.

Each year the Fire Marshal’s Office honors the men and women who have gone above and beyond the call of duty and provided exceptional service. This year Duncan Falls Volunteer Fire Department Chief Don Alexander will be honored with the Distinguished Service Award. He’s remaining humble about the accolade and isn’t even sure who nominated him, but he has his suspicions.

“It’s just a little bit overwhelming. I’m not positive I’m deserving of this award, but apparently other people think I am. I haven’t done anything that I don’t think everybody is supposed to do that’s in the fire service. It’s pretty awesome to be chosen I guess,” said Duncan Falls Volunteer Fire Department Chief Don Alexander.

Chief Alexander credits the many mentors he’s had over the years for helping him to get to his position today. Alexander joined the department in 1972 and as he said never left.

“Everybody needs to give back to their community and this is where I’ve always lived. I was going to college out at OUZ and turned 18 and the postmaster here Norma Betts made sure I got the application to join because I was around in the daytime and back then just like today daytime help was a real premium in the fire service,” said Alexander.

Chief Alexander will receive his award Wednesday during a ceremony at COSI in Columbus at 2pm. This is the 41st year for the awards. A live stream is available at www.ohiochannel.org/live/special-events

Also being recognized is Captain Josh Harrison from the Monroe Township Fire Department in Licking County. Captain Harrison will receive the Ohio Fire Officer of the Year Award.
