THORNVILLE, Ohio – For the second time in the last four years the Sheridan girls basketball team is prepping for a trip to the state final four.
The Generals will head to Dayton Thursday to take on the Norton Panthers in game one of the DII state semifinal. Both teams dominated in their regional championship games to get to the University of Dayton and both are seeking their first ever state title.
Sheridan head coach J.D. Walters knows they’ll have their hands full with the Summit County school.
“They’re going to pressure the ball. That’s what they do best. They run and jump and trap. They are really pesky. All five of them. They try to speed you up. They outrebounded their regional opponent by 20,” said Walters.
The Generals have players with state tournament experience under their belt. As freshman Faith Stinson and Bailey Beckstedt both played on the 2019 General team that went to the final four.
That year the tournament was in Columbus at Ohio State. This year it’s 70 miles west at the University of Dayton. A building the Generals have some experience with.
“We’ve gone to Dayton for some team shootouts in the past. It’s going to be a great arena for girls basketball because the Schott was so big. The Schott’s proximity was better for us but the actual arena for the basketball game will have a hand up over the Schott,” said Walters.
If you can’t make it Dayton on Thursday we’ll have live radio coverage for you. Pregame coverage starts at 5:30 with the tip off at 6 on WHIZ 92.7 and streaming on whiznews.com.
