A Zanesville man who attacked a Genesis Police Officer was found guilty in Common Pleas Court in Muskingum County.
Bernard Hayes was found guilty of felonious assault after jurors heard from six witnesses during a three-day trial. Authorities said Hayes was a patient at Genesis Hospital, December 5, when he became increasingly aggressive with medical staff treating him in the emergency room.
Hospital officers were called to assist in detaining Hayes, who had ben held for observation. Hayes then knocked an officer to the ground unconscious and stripped him of his gun. At that time a second officer arrived and wrestled Hayes off the unconscious officer.
The officer tased the defendant and took him into custody. The officer continues to suffer from the injuries of that night. Hayes is being held in Muskingum County Jail without bond while awaiting his sentence.
Hayes faces a minimum of three years in prison to a maximum of 11.
