Monday afternoon on WHIZ-TV we were honored to present to the community the 28th Annual Martin Luther King Junior Scholarship Prayer Breakfast.
The scholarship foundation honors 20 area high school seniors with a book scholarship as well as five college students from Zane State, Ohio University Zanesville and Muskingum University. Several dignitaries spoke to the students, during the event including Ohio Senator Tim Schaffer, who encouraged the students to always remember their home.
“Don’t lose sight of your home whether it be your family or your community always know that you will have a home in Muskingum County, in Ohio. It’s imperative that we continue to grow and support our communities, our region and our state and keep our valuable skills and knowledge here in Ohio and close to home,” said State Senator Tim Schaffer.
As part of the breakfast the foundation honored Transitions of Zanesville a women’s shelter for those that are victims of domestic violence and encouraged the community to take part in a food drive for the Muskingum County Hunger Network. US Congressman Troy Balderson shared what he believes is Doctor King’s message.
“Dr. King set an example all of us should strive to learn from and live by when he said everyone can be great because anybody can serve you only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love,” said Rep. Troy Balderson. “I believe that we must all work together to make this world a better place through small acts of kindness and service. Just as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. taught us.”
