ZANESVILLE, Ohio-Due to the severe winter weather this year has seen the Red Cross of America has missed out on an estimated 21,000 blood donations across the country.
Muskingum County has been among the areas hit hardest. The Red Cross division of East and South Central Ohio has teamed up with the Guernsey and Muskingum County Association of Realtors to hold a community blood drive.
“The blood drive is Wednesday, February 24th, from 10am-4pm here at Secrest Auditorium, downtown Zanesville. We are in the basement here. We really wanted to thank the community that has given us a lot in the last year. Our real estate has been amazing this past year so we really wanted to say thank you because obviously this community is what helped us so we wanted to help them a little bit,” Guernsey and Muskingum County Association of Realtors Community Relations Committee Chair Angi Nicholopoulos said.
The drive has had a great sign-up so far but it still has slots available. The sign up process is meant to be quick and easy.
“You can either call 1-800-REDCROSS and listen for the prompt to donate blood or you can go to redcrossblood.org and look for a blood drive and sign up that way. For me the best way and the easiest way is if you have a smartphone: just download the blood app in your app store and you can look for a blood drive and sign up for it,” Red Cross Executive Director Rod Cook said.
One blood donation can save up to three lives during medical emergencies.
