MUSKINGUM COUNTY, Ohio-The annual Veterans Day parade in downtown Zanesville is being canceled this year.
The cancellation is due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its ongoing effects on Muskingum County. Chairman of the parade Ron Gottke tells us how the decision came to be made.
“We had a meeting here last week with the Muskingum Valley Veteran’s Council, who I’m with, and we started talking about cancellation. I told them I’m cancelling the plaques that I normally get, cause I can’t see spending $800 on plaques and we might not have the parade. Then I got a call Saturday morning cancelling the parade.”
The parade cancellation also means cancellation for the annual induction for new Veteran Hall of Fame members. Though the ceremony is cancelled Gottke would still like to acknowledge the inductees.
“We were gonna introduce John Norman, Terry Khune, Dean Cole, Harry West and John Nelson. John Nelson is in the Clay House, he was a Tuskegee Airman during World War II. Instead, this year we’re gonna cancel the dinner also, and we’re gonna deliver the awards to each individual personally.”
If you would still look to honor Veterans, on November 11th Gottke would have you take a moment of silence.
