CLEVELAND (AP) — A dismembered body found ablaze last week near railroad tracks in Cleveland has been identified as a 54-year-old woman, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office said Wednesday.
The body of Benette Smith, of Painesville, was found by Cleveland firefighters who had responded to an apparent brush fire on Feb. 19 in a secluded area of the city. Authorities later said shrubs were placed on top of the body and set on fire.
Cleveland police have not yet provided details about its investigation of Smith’s death.
Smith was released from state prison last March after serving an 18-month-sentence on charges of harassment by inmate and assault.
An information filed in Cuyahoga County in August 2017 said Smith was accused of “throwing or expelling” bodily fluids at a man at a local correction facility. She also was charged with assaulting a female employee at the correction facility.
