ZANESVILLE, Ohio — Avid bird watchers will take delight in an event the Muskingum Valley Park District is planning for this weekend.
“We’re going to be participating in the Great American Backyard Bird Count. This is something that Cornell Laboratories and the Audubon Society does each year. Basically, as the name implies, we’ll be here at MIssion Oaks Gardens and based at several locations including here at the Discovery Shed at Olga’s Children’s Garden, and we’re going to be counting birds,” says the Park District’s Russell Edgington.
“We’re encouraging families, Mom and Dad, to bring the kids out Saturday. That program is from 8am until 10am and we suggest that everybody dress for the weather. It’s supposed to be a little bit chilly, but that’s okay because that encourages the birds to be here at the feeding station that’s just on the back side of the Discovery Shed,” Edgington adds.
Volunteers who are members of the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Program will be taking participants to a staging area containing several bird feeders. They will count the birds which include Crows, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Chickadees, House Sparrows, Goldfinches and House Finches.
