ZANESVILLE, Ohio — Fifth graders from several area school districts take part in an art contest to honor local veterans.
“We hold this every year at Secrest Auditorium. The purpose is to involve the community’s fifth grade students to become aware of and show them ways to honor veterans that are in our community. Whether they know a veteran in their own family or in their church or in their neighborhood, or don’t know a veteran but recognize them out in public areas,” says Heidi Williams, Volunteer & Marketing Consultant for Genesis Hospice.
Williams tells WHIZ News the contest, for fifth graders, highlights what is a veteran, and what they do for the United States.
“We get a wonderful amount of art & essays delivered to us from the schools. Then we have the hard task of choosing winners. We invite all the schools that participate to come, then we announce winners and present them with a certificate of participation, then their art and essays back,” she adds.
Williams says small cash prizes were awarded to those students who won top spots in the judging.
