Local Kids Warm Up at Coat Giveaway

Local News

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary is holding their annual event “Coats for Kids” today and tomorrow. It’s a coat give away for kids who qualify.

Preparation for the giveaway starts in the beginning of the year but a member of the auxiliary, Beth Archer, says seeing a child picking out their new coat is her favorite part.

“It’s really the two best days of the year because we are getting to be with the people when we give the coats away. A lot of little kids come in for this so we are counting on seeing those kids with their coats on and usually they put their coats on and don’t want to take them off.”

The event began years ago with donated coats. Now the auxiliary hand picks each coat to give away and they’re all brand new.

She says buying coats for the giveaway not only helps families but local businesses as well.

“This year we have over 700 new coats which we’ve purchased from local businesses here in town as well as the local area. I think it’s important because I want Zanesville to continue to have stores. We’ve lost some of our best stores and that’s the reason we always go out local. “

The event began Thursday and will continue tomorrow at the salvation army on Putnam Avenue.
