ZANESVILLE, Ohio – It was a day full of action yesterday along the Muskingum River.
Cannons were blasting off and muskets were firing during a civil war re-enactment. Soldiers were firing their weapons off the Lorena Sternwheeler, while soldiers along the river bank were returning fire. Chamber of Commerce Vice President, Kelly Ashby said the Lorena was sold out, and people had an excellent time.
“We are having a great Civil War re-enactment and we certainly appreciate the community support and all of our out of town guests. That is what is so awesome about the Lorena Sternwheeler and different events that we put on throughout the year. Folks travel from all over to come and enjoy the Muskingum River and enjoy the Lorena Sternwheeler. Then they are visiting other things in the area as well,” said Ashby.
Ashby added there were about 70 reenactors yesterday, 5 cannons, and several gunmen firing their guns. Civil War Reenactor, Bob Daniels said they have been doing this event for five years, and they go all over re-enacting battles.
“I often thought about, wouldn’t it be neat to get a cannon, put it on the boat and run the boat down the river, and shoot at it. I ran the idea to the chamber and they said it sounded pretty cool. So, I think this is maybe our fifth year doing it and I guess they have sold out the last three years,” said Daniels.
Ashby said the tickets went really quick for the Lorena this year. She suggests acting quickly next year if you want to get tickets.
