SOUTH ZANESVILLE, Ohio – People of all ages gathered Saturday for the 4th Annual Gable Connors Memorial Scholarship Tournament.
A wrestling tournament that took place today to pin suicide. Gable Connors Memorial Scholarship Tournament Organizer, Shawn Connors lost his son, Gable, six years ago to suicide, and he is trying to raise awareness.
“Too many times people don’t want to talk about suicide. Every year we do this, we have a speaker come in, talk to them for a little bit. A lot of people don’t think about it. They don’t think it could happen to them. My son was a fairly intelligent kid, A-B student, very athletic, played three sports, and was very popular and you just don’t know,” said Connors.
People from all over Ohio and surrounding states came out to participate at Maysville High School today. This tournament also raises money for the Pin Suicide Scholarships. Each year Shawn hands out multiple scholarships to students.
“Just looking at all the awards and scholarships and stuff like that. We wanted to one, give back to the community, so we do three $500 scholarships. One to a Maysville senior, one to a senior from the Muskingum Valley League and one to anyone in the state just to give back and raise awareness,” Connors added.
The tournament was for ages 5 and up and even one 45-year-old came out to wrestle. Connors thanks everyone that came out today to support the cause.
