ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Eastside Community Ministry recently held their first “Just Donate” competition between eight local gyms.
This competition was part of the Lace Up for Kids Campaign. While all of the gyms are winners for getting so many pairs of shoes donated, the Southtown Gym donated the most pairs. Which means Southown Gym won the first ever Golden Sneaker Award, An award Southtown Gym Manager, Abbie Williams is proud to have.
“It is a really big deal. My family is deeply rooted in this community, so anything that we can do to help the community, especially kids is just really near and dear to my heart. I have three boys, two going into school this year. I know how important shoes are and just getting a new pair of shoes for the school year always meant a lot to me as a kid and anything that we can do to give that to area kids just means everything,” said Williams.
Eastside Community Ministry Board Member, Katie Graham said this was the first time holding the competition, but they are hoping to make it an annual event.
Graham said, “We were just thinking of a way to give an award. We didn’t just want to give away a trophy and we thought we are collecting shoes, why not give a golden shoe. Our hopes are that this will be an annual thing and we will continue it and then whoever wins next year will get the same golden sneaker.”
Shoe applications will be accepted at Eastside Ministry on July 15th through the 18th, July 22nd, and July 29th from 9:00 AM to 4:00PM.
