Zanesville Memorial Park: Memorial Day Service

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Zanesville Memorial Park had their Annual Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27th.

The service included members from the American Legion Post 29 and the West Muskingum High School Band. Major James Delbrugge spoke about how our country got to where it is today.

“It’s not from the people who are currently serving, although they are a big part of it, but mainly for the people who lost their lives who aren’t with us today and how they need to be remembered,” Major Delbrugge said.

He is currently the Senior Army Instructor for the JROTC at Zanesville High School and Major Delbrugge said all of his experiences have provided him the opportunity to speak at the service. Major Delbrugge thought the turnout of the Memorial Day Service was great and he enjoys seeing the communities support.

“Things we have, the numerous privileges and benefits that we have are from the people that gave their lives unwillingly, without looking for anything other than they felt it was their duty,” Major Delbrugge said. “That’s why my children are here, my son is 15 and I think he needs to understand that there’s kids now that don’t understand what it was like to storm the beaches of Normandy and I’m hoping he gets a better understanding by bringing him to things like this.”

Major Delbrugge said the people who didn’t make it back are the true heros. He wants community members to remember that Memorial Day is to honor those who lost their lives serving.
