Teen accused of shootout with officer competent for trial

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio man who authorities say exchanged gunfire with an off-duty police officer while fleeing a gas station robbery has been ruled competent to stand trial.

The Dayton Daily News reports Montgomery County Common Barbara Gorman set a June 3 trial date Wednesday for 19-year-old Charles Ashford, of Dayton, on charges that include aggravated robbery, felonious assault on a police officer and impersonating a police officer.

Police say Ashford was shot in the arm in February 2018 in the Dayton suburb of Miamisburg after firing at an off-duty Miami Township officer police while claiming to be an FBI agent. Prosecutors say Ashford was trying to carjack a vehicle at gunpoint when he was shot.

Ashford’s attorney entered an insanity plea for him in January.
