ZANESVILLE, Ohio. – Friday is the last day to turn in nominations for two student-athlete scholarships given to Southeastern Ohio students. They’re provided each year by the Fieldhouse Foundation and WHIZ Media Group.
The Scholar Athlete of the Year Scholarship has been going on for 19 years and it is worth $2,500. The other scholarship available is the Courageous Student Award. Fieldhouse Owner Mick Amicone says there is 3,000 dollars worth of scholarships. The scholarship is based on four categories that are important to Amicone.
“The four criteria academics, athletics, community service, and honestly what we feel is the most important is the faith based part of that. We want that student that is totally rounded, and here at the Fieldhouse and the Fieldhouse Foundation we feel that total wellness is mind, body, and spirit,” Amicone said.
Amicone said part of the funding comes from their foundation sponsors. Genesis Health Care System, Century National Bank, and Williamson Insurance. He said they have been so helpful, and have helped raise over 50,000 dollars worth of scholarships for Southeastern Ohio students. One interesting part about this scholarship is there is no self-nomination and no parent nominations.
“This has to be nominated by a school administrator, a pastor, a coach, or a teacher. it can’t be a parent nomination either. So we want those to come from obviously one of the four criteria that were involved with,” Amicone also added.
Again nominations have to be in by tomorrow. They will then go through the nominees and will award the winners over the next couple of days. They will then have a brunch to honor the winners sometime in May.
