ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Zanesville Police Department has recently received a few calls about employers receiving text messages from staff members that are requesting them to buy gift cards for a client, scratch them off and tell them what the numbers are on the card.
“We’re asking that if you offer business here or you’re doing business here in this city and you get a strange request from a coworker or a boss to double check if it’s actually them asking,” Chief Coury said.
There are apps out there that can make it easy for scammers to use phone numbers that look real. Chief Coury said there is a local businesswoman who recently contacted him and mentioned one of her employees messaged her about getting an apple gift card and it was not actually that employee. He said this is not the first time it has happened and it won’t be the last but he just wants people to be mindful.
