Fire in Local Building

Local News

A fire broke out early this morning around 2:30 a.m at 940 W. Main Street.

After two hours the Zanesville Fire Department was able to get the fire under control. West Main was closed from Pine to Ridge Avenue while crews worked on getting the building torn down. We spoke with Assistant Chief for the Zanesville Fire Department, Doug Hobson to find out more:

“They’re going to bring the whole building down, that’s the main concern right now. We’re on a main throroughfare here with w. Main. We’ve got west main closed from pine all the way to ridge so we want to make sure we get this opened back up but the only way we can get the road opened back up is to have the building completely on the ground” Hobson said.

The building was vacant and there were no utilities hooked up which makes this a suspicious fire right off the bat Hobson says.

“During the fire we couldn’t get through to every spot to check unfortunately if anybody was inside. It was a vacant building, we may have had people sleeping inside to get out of the cool air last night. So the ladder behind me trying to go through, look above, make sure they don’t see anybody inside the building” he later explained.

The direct cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.
