Ice cream lovers from all over the state ventured to Utica this Memorial Day weekend for the 41st annual Utica Sertoma Ice Cream Festival.
The festival, held on the grounds of Energy Cooperative and Velvet Ice Cream Company, offers more than just ice cream. Attendees can enjoy free games, live entertainment, crafts and more! For Jason Samples of Newark, it’s the endless amount of different ice cream flavors that keeps him and his family coming back each year.
“It seems like they’re introducing more and more new flavors each year, so it’s kind of fun to get out and enjoy the new flavors before they get in stores,” Samples said.
According to Assistant Chairman of the festival, Al Shomaker, the Utica-Sertoma Club hosts the event in an effort to give back to the community.
“We do community support and we sponsor Little League baseball, Babe Ruth baseball and girls softball,” Shomaker said. “We give scholarships to seniors in North Fork and North Ridge high schools. Since we’ve started this festival, we’ve probably given a million-and-a-half dollars back into the community.”
The festival runs every Memorial Day weekend and Shomaker says they always have a great turnout, rain or shine.
