Hundreds of area residents are walking through the night, all for a good cause

Relay for Life of Muskingum County hosted their annual event at the fairgrounds Saturday. The walking started a little after 4 p.m. and runs 18 hours through the morning. Just because you may not have been there to start the event, doesn’t mean it’s too late to join.

"Well if you’re still awake at 11 o’clock, come visit us," said Elizabeth Lewis, co-chair of the event.  "We’re going to be here all night, so we have a lot of great games and stuff going on. We’re going to do zumba, so if you’re tired of working night shift and just got off, you can come visit. We’re going to be up all night, and we’re going to still be here. We’re going to have music going, and we’ll keep you company."

Around 20 teams participated in this year’s walk to honor cancer survivors as well as to pay respects to those who lost their fights. Money raised from the event goes to help fund cancer research.

"About 80% of it goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s research foundation which does cancer research to find cures and treatments to completely eliminate cancer," Lewis said.  "The rest of it actually comes back to the local American Cancer Society, so back to Muskingum County, and that funds their programs."

The walk included live entertainment, food, and a silent auction. Lewis says $105,000 were raised at last year’s event. The goal this year is $108,000.
