Homeless Count a Success

Local News

An army of volunteers took to the streets to find homeless in our area.

Between 75-90 volunteers took part in the point in time count to help count homeless in our area. The group covered all of Zanesville and traveled to the outlying areas of Dresden and Frazeysburg. During the count nine unsheltered homeless were located.

"Last year I think it was between 20 to 25. It might have been up to 30," explained Salvation Army Shelter Manger Karen Walker. "That has decreased and that’s what we wanted to happen. I think a lot of that has to do with the funding that we’ve had over the last couple of years and we’ve been able to help individuals get into housing."

Walker said they did see some locations where it looked like people may be living, but weren’t there at the time. The number of homeless could also increase as they begin to review data. The information will be turned over to Housing and Urban Development.

"They again can take that information and they can determine where is the help needed and what area and what counties and that’s why it’s very vital we have a correct accurate data," said Walker.

Walker encourages the community and agencies to keep working together to help individuals get back on their feet. She also says in this cold weather shelter is available at the Salvation Army.
