Council Accepts Fact-finding Report

The City of Zanesville and Fraternal Order of Police/Ohio Labor Council are one step closer to producing a new labor pact.

On Monday Zanesville City Council accepted recommendations in a fact-finding report by the State Employment Relations Board.  Mayor Jeff Tilton said the union has seven days to either accept or reject those terms.  He said it helps to have input from a third party.

"We have the outside source, which looks at both sides," said Tilton.  "Each side gets to put out their information, and then he looks at it, and more or less, gets a medium take on it."

The legislation was up for emergency action because the prior three-year police contract expired on December 31st.  Tilton said he’s relieved that progress is being made.

"We’ve had extensions on the former contract," said Tilton.  "We just sign those until we get the new contract into place.  We negotiated, we came to kind of an impasse, so we went to mediation, came to an impasse and then we went to fact-finder."

The city reached a new three-year agreement with Local 88 of the International Association of Fire Fighters in January.
