Early detection is key for dealing with almost every medical problem, but especially when it comes to your vision.
Glaucoma is one of the most common reasons for permanent vision loss. Glaucoma often creeps up on people because it affects their peripheral vision slowly over time.
"Most people don’t know they have it until it is very late and they start missing traffic lights and start tripping over steps or those kinds of things and at that point, unfortunately, it is pretty close to the lights going out in the eye," says Ophthalmologist Ross Bloomberg.
Glaucoma is caused by pressure in the eye. Dr. Bloomberg says he sees a problem with glaucoma in our area and there are some groups who are at a higher risk.
"People that are African American are more likely to have it, people with diabetes are more likely to have it, people with other people in the family are more at risk for it," says Dr. Bloomberg.
Dr. Bloomberg says the most common treatment for glaucoma is eye drops, but there are laser and operating procedures that are necessary in some cases to relieve pressure on the eye.
