Zanesville’s Best Kept Secret

Local News

Zanesville’s best kept secret is now open to the public.

The Muskingum County Master Gardeners and the Muskingum Valley Horticultural Volunteers want to share Mission Oaks Gardens with the community.

“The reason that it’s the best kept secret is because of its seclusion. The garden is bordered by a ravine in the center part, and we have the plants around the ravine to kind of protect it. It has its own unique climate as far as gardening. We don’t see plants that grow over all this community here, this area, and this county. You’ll see them in this garden because of the protection it has here from the elements, ” says Muskingum Valley Horticultural Volunteers’, Darlene Turner.

Turner says the property is located on Norwood Blvd. and sits on about six acres.

While it’s been around since 1925, she says the property has gone through a lot of changes over the years, both good and bad.

Now that Mission Oaks Gardens is full of green and covered in flowers, Turner says the public can come in anytime to enjoy it.

“We also have an opportunity here for people to have a wedding if they’d like to, in the lower garden. It’s a great place for bird watching and for photography here for students. Also, we have a lot of students come here for their pictures, Senior pictures, ” says Turner.

The Muskingum County Master Gardeners and the Muskingum Valley Horticultural Volunteers held public tours this afternoon to show off the property. She says about 50 people came to visit.
