School may be out, but local kids are picking up the books this summer as part of the “Be Creative with Books” Summer Reading Program.
Kids and their families are invited to come and participate every Monday night at the Duncan Falls-Philo Branch Library from now until July 25th.
Program Assistant, Denise Hamric, says it’s so important for kids to keep up their reading during the summer.
“It helps keep their skills and hopefully build their skills over the summer. So, when they go into the next grade, they’ll be able to continue with that they left off with in the last grade, ” says Hamric.
Hamric has invited multiple guests to come and read to the kids each week. She says she wants to do anything she can to show kids that reading isn’t dull and boring.
“We are encouraging them to read by themselves, read to mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa, read to their pets, read to their stuffed animals…Anybody and anything they can think of, as long as it’s fun, ” says Hamric.
The kids will keep a reading record of all the books they read over the summer. Hamric says depending on the kids’ ages, she’s had some read as many as one hundred books in one summer.
