Phone Cards for Local Troops

Local News

Some local soldiers will soon have more time on the phone with family and friends.

Engines were revving as motorcyclists participated in the “Riding for the Troops” event.

They passed through three counties today, stopping at five American Legion Posts, to raise money that will be used to buy 20 dollar phone cards for soldiers who are oversees.

Russell Brooks, who participated, says that means soldiers are gaining an additional 330-minutes of phone time.

“It’s nice to know, of course, you keep in contact with your family. The cost today of phone calls is pretty high. So, to help the families out, you talking, talking to some of the wives and their phone bills are getting astronomical trying to make phone calls from here over to Afghanistan and Iraq, ” says Brooks.

Brooks says more than 85 motorcyclists came out to support our troops.

“We just appreciate everyone’s turnout and support by the community. We have a lot of local businesses that’s donated. We have a list over there of all the people-public or private-donating and companies. They treated us real good, and hopefully, this will become an annual event for us and raise money for our troops,” says Brooks.

The group has held a Poker Run every year, but Brooks says this is the first time it had a theme…”Riding for the Troops”.
