Local Impact of State Budget

Local News

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland is asking state lawmakers to continue working until a new two-year budget is reached that will replace the one that expired last week.

Locally, Muskingum County Commissioner John Bates says he’s concerned about how the budget will affect Muskingum County.

“It can have a big impact on a lot of agencies in the county if this budget, I mean, we’ve already had different agencies coming in and saying ‘Look, we’re going to need some help,’ ” says Bates.

Bates says the commissioners are being very cautious about how to spend the county’s money.

“We’re looking at it, and we’re studying everything. We’re watching the county’s fund to see what we can do. There might be some things we can’t do, ” says Bates.

Bates says they are working closely with state representatives. He says he thinks lawmakers are maybe taking a second look at where cuts will be coming from to make sure the state budget contains what the state needs overall.
